FAQs

Q. What is Aimhigher?

Aimhigher is the name of the project working to widen participation in Higher Education for more young people and adults - especially 18 to 30 year olds.

Our aim is to encourage those, who might not normally think that Higher Education is for them, to think again.  We offer a range of support via projects to raise awareness, aspiration and achievement.

The Aimhigher Lincolnshire and Rutland team works in partnership with schools, colleges, work-based learning providers and employers to help young people and adults make the right choices about Higher Education.

Q. What is an Apprenticeship?

Apprenticeships are nationally designed training programmes that are available for fourteen year olds, young people and adults. They were introduced in 2004 to replace the existing Modern Apprenticeships.

Young people and adults are taught new skills within a framework agreed with employers which is set against national qualification and work standards. Learners have the opportunity to learn on the job, build up new skills/knowledge, gain qualifications at Level 2 or 3 and earn money.

Q. What is Further Education?

Further Education is study at Level 3. It is taken after Level 2 qualifications such as GCSEs, GNVQ intermediate or work–based learning NVQ2. It is usually taken after the age of sixteen or later in life as a mature student.

Level 3 Further Education courses can be taken in school sixth forms, colleges or at work-based learning placements. Students will gain AS Levels, A2 Levels, GNVQ, BTEC, AVCE, NVQ3 or a combination of these qualifications with Key Skills.

Many adults take an Access course at a college of Further Education.  This offers students a valuable study experience before progressing to Higher Education.

Q. What is Higher Education?

Higher Education is study at Level 4, taken after successful completion of Level 3. There are many ways to obtain Higher Education qualifications other than through 3 year full-time courses.

They bring Higher Education and employment closer together and could be ideal for starting or furthering a career. Study can be full or part time.

Foundation Degrees are Level 4 qualifications that can be topped up to a Honours Degree with 1 year of full-time study or 2 years of part-time study.

Q. What qualifications are needed to get a place on a Foundation Degree?

Entry qualifications are flexible and may take into account previous work and study experience.  Students may need to show a relevant standard of Level 3 education.
