A
FREE 'Looked After Children' Conference For Carers, Care
Providers & Care Organisations
A new government green paper
emphasising the needs of looked after children and care leavers
draws attention to the low participation rate of young people who
enter higher education from care and highlights the need to
strengthen transition and support arrangements for these
students.
In
response to these findings, Aimhigher Lincolnshire
& Rutland is holding a FREE conference for carers, care
providers and care organisations on Wednesday 13th June
2007.
Places are
limited and on a 'first come first served basis' with a closing
date of 7th May 2007. For further details and / or to book a
place, please click here
This
conference is the first
stage of Aimhigher's focus in 2007 to identify and support
those carers, care providers and care organisations involved
with children in care. The key area of this support will be
raising awareness of the educational needs of looked after children
when it comes to progression routes and what is available at
university. This empowerment of key workers will then
hopefully impact on how and what information and advice is given to
children in care as well as those leaving care.
Our ‘Looked
After Children’ project will focus on working with a small number
of students in this target group to help raise their attainment and
aspirations.
Nationally, only one in ten
children in care attained 5 good GCSEs in 2005 compared with more
than half of all children. Furthermore, only 6% of 19 year
olds go into higher education compared with nearly a third of all
young people.
