FAQs

Q. What is Aimhigher?

Aimhigher is the name of the project working to widen participation in Higher Education for more young people and adults - especially 18 to 30 year olds.

Our aim is to encourage those, who might not normally think that Higher Education is for them, to think again. We offer a range of support to help them, e.g. completing applications, preparing for interviews, etc.

The Aimhigher Lincolnshire and Rutland team works in partnership with schools, colleges, work-based learning providers and employers to help young people and adults make the right choices about Higher Education.

We hope you will think again about progressing to Higher Education.

Q. What is an Apprenticeship?

Apprenticeships are nationally designed training programmes that are available for fourteen year olds, young people and adults.

They were introduced in 2004 to replace the existing Modern Apprenticeships.

You are taught new skills within a framework agreed with employers which is set against national qualification and work standards. You will have the opportunity to learn on the job, build up new skills/knowledge, gain qualifications at Level 2 or 3 and earn money.

Level 3 Further Education courses can be taken in school sixth forms, colleges or at work-based learning placements. You can gain either AS Levels, A2 Levels, GNVQ, BTEC, AVCE, NVQ3 or a combination of these qualifications with Key Skills.

Q. What is Higher Education?

Higher Education is study at Level 4, taken after successful completion of Level 3.

There are many ways to obtain Higher Education qualifications other than through 3 year full-time courses.

Q. What are Foundation Degrees?

Foundation Degrees are employment-related Higher Education qualifications, designed to equip you with the high-level skills that are sought by employers.

They bring Higher Education and employment closer together and could be ideal for starting your career. Study can be full or part-time and undertaken while you are working.

Foundation Degrees are Level 4 qualifications that can be topped up to a Honour's Degree with 1 year of full-time study or 2 years of part-time study.

Q. How can I find a suitable Foundation Degree?

Q. Is the Foundation Degree an easier form of Higher Education?

No. It is a high quality Degree programme underpinned by rigorous and broad-based academic learning and workplace training.

Foundation Degrees add another aspect to Higher Education by offering more learning which fits to your work-place.

Q. What qualifications do I need to get a place on a Foundation Degree?

Entry qualifications are flexible and may take into account previous work and study experience.  However, you may need to show a relevant standard of Level 3 education.

Many universities accept a relevant Advanced Apprenticeship as an entry requirement. Approach the individual college or university of choice or search on the UCAS web site www.ucas.co.uk
