Local students were given an
opportunity to find out all that university has to offer when the
Aimhigher Roadshow called at ten locations throughout Lincolnshire
& Rutland.
Taking place aboard a
state-of-the-art 27ft trailer, the roadshow helped to raise
students’ awareness of courses available and the financial support
packages on offer to them, should they choose to go on to higher
education. As well as a plasma screen, notebook laptops and a DVD
to watch, students were able to answer questions and give their
opinions about higher education at the touch of a button using
hand-held voting pads.
Gemma Casey, a recent graduate,
was also on hand to provide the Year 12 students with an
interactive presentation on all aspects of student life, from
subject choices to finance.
“Many of the students that
visited the roadshow hadn’t ever considered higher education –
mainly due to low aspirations or lack of confidence. Our main aim
was to demonstrate that, whether they are currently doing A-Levels
or a vocational course, university could be a very real option for
them, and the majority left really excited about the
prospect.”
The roadshow, now in its seventh
year, is part of a national programme to encourage more young
people from backgrounds with little or no family experience of
higher education to consider university. The tour has demonstrated
real success in changing participants’ perceptions, with recent
feedback revealing a 57% positive shift in attitudes towards higher
education following the experience. Back
